how to - Manually put a BMW into Neutral

Vehicles with Electronic Shifter

If you’re reading this now, you have likely discovered that towing these BMWs can be a daunting task. Fear not! With a few simple tools and steps, you can put your car into neutral and tow it with ease. We'll guide you through the process, so you can save the day when you encounter an ill-equipped tow truck driver. Before getting started, make sure one of its wheels is chocked to prevent it from rolling. This will keep you safe and make your insurance company happy.

You'll need the following tools:

  • An 8mm socket with a ratchet

  • A 5mm Allen key or bit socket

Now, carefully follow these steps:

  • Depending on your vehicle, you may need to use a jack to crawl underneath. For vehicles like the X3 or X5, their height should provide enough space to slide under without any additional help.

  • Use the 8mm socket and ratchet to remove the transmission shield, which will expose the Allen screw on the driver's side of the transmission pan.

  • With the 5mm Allen key or bit socket, turn the exposed screw clockwise (tightening) until it stops. At this point, the transmission is released from Park.

  • Now that your vehicle is in neutral, you can confidently hand it over to the tow truck driver, knowing you've done your part to protect your prized possession.

Many tow truck companies may not have the expertise or tools to properly engage these vehicles, risking damage in the process. By following these simple steps, you can ensure your car is towed safely and efficiently, making you the hero of the day.
